Freelancers make theatre work

Global Conflict resources

In times of war and conflict, the arts take on a profound and often overlooked role. While the immediate needs in war zones understandably focus on physical survival; – shelter, food, and safety – there is also a fundamental need for emotional survival and collective healing. Theatre, as a medium for storytelling and shared experience, offers a powerful outlet for communities living through the unimaginable.

Currently in regions throughout the world where conflict deeply impacts daily life, amidst the devastation, the arts and theatre offer both an artistic escape and a vital space for expression, resilience, and resistance. But what role can those of us living far from conflict zones play in supporting the arts in such places? And how can we be effective allies to those freelancers and arts workers who are directly affected?

As part of Freelancers Make Theatre Work's ongoing Anti-racism commitment, we have launched this new section of the website which contains information and resources about ongoing global conflicts that affect many freelancers within the arts.

Although FMTW is non-partisan, that doesn't mean we aren't political. Our policy at FMTW is to not release statements on political matters, however we acknowledge freelancers are affected by global events. On these pages you will find resources compiled by FMTW and freelancers with lived experiences.

All the information collated in these pages has been sourced by members of FMTW or submitted via arts freelancers. FMTW is not responsible for the content on third-party sites and with the evolving nature of conflicts, some of the information may quickly become outdated. While we do our utmost to be up to date this is work taken on by volunteers and we rely on freelancers to contribute to and expand these sections.

If we are missing resources you feel would be beneficial, please let us know.
