FREELANCING 101

Money, tax and admin

Build a small, repeatable system for the practical side of freelance work

Money and admin! Arrgghhhh! Try not to worry... money and admin are learnable systems, not a test of whether you are good at business. Take it in small steps and set up a small routine early and it will protect your time, cash flow and confidence. Let's start by separating employment status from tax status: a job can pay you through PAYE, engage you as a worker, or treat you as self-employed, and the label on an email or contract is not always decisive. Many performing-arts freelancers have a mixed portfolio and that's fine!

If you are trading as a sole trader (freelancer), record income and costs from day one, issue complete invoices, keep evidence and plan for tax before the deadline. Where possible, your fee also needs to cover preparation, travel, equipment, insurance, professional development, pension saving, quiet weeks and unpaid admin, not only the hours in the room. If your income drops or changes, do not assume that freelance or self-employed work makes you ineligible for benefits or other financial support, but be aware that separate eligibility and reporting rules can apply. Use the tools below to build a repeatable monthly system.
