Last week, Freelancers Make Theatre Work attended the ABTT Theatre Show. This two day trade show and networking event happens every year at Alexandra Palace in North London and for the last three years, FMTW have kindly been given a stand by The ABTT.

It’s a great two days with a huge mix of freelancers, companies, organisations, drama schools and unions mingling, meeting and taking part in live demonstrations, seminars and training sessions. The event is free to attend and this year there was a noticeable increase in young people eager to enter the theatre world which was really encouraging to see.

The theatre show is a great opportunity for FMTW to chat to freelancers and other organisations ‘in person,’ to hear first hand people’s experiences within the industry over the last 12 months, to chat to people about the work we do on behalf of theatre freelancers. And also to talk to businesses and companies about how best to support and attract freelancers.

Over the two days, we spoke to hundreds of freelancers and some of the topics discussed included:

•Industry standards on accommodation and travel
•How to freelance – young people coming into the workforce
•Where to find work
•Clauses added to contracts post pandemic – termination fees should be added
•Jobs board: Posting jobs for employers / Finding freelancers for employers / freelancers looking for jobs / freelancers available for hire
•WORKSHOPS – getting INTO freelancing / What is a freelancer?!
•Surveying employers on their freelancer pay rates

Thanks to everyone who came over and shared their thoughts with us and to those who came over to find out more about what FMTW does for freelancers in the industry.

Special thanks to Freelance Designer Peter McKintosh for the gorgeous set box we displayed over the two days and to Set Up Scenery for the set box stand.
