The team at Freelancers Make Theatre Work stand in full solidarity with our trans and non-binary colleagues following last week’s UK Supreme Court ruling.

This decision, which defines “woman” in equalities law as “biological sex,” has understandably raised fear and uncertainty within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Freelancers already face a lack of consistency when it comes to workplace protections. For trans freelancers, moving from job to job without clear, enforced inclusion policies can make already precarious work even more unsafe.

We call on all employers and organisations in the arts to reaffirm, in action, not just words, their commitment to inclusion, safety and dignity. This includes ensuring ALL freelancers are protected, respected, and supported across all working environments.

There is no thriving creative industry without a diverse workforce. We see you. We stand with you.
